DTV Transition Converter Box FAQ’s and How to Apply for Your Converter Box Coupons

Buy a converter box that will plug into your analog TV.

I know that many of our viewers receive our programming using an antenna, and are worried about what happens after the February 17, 2009 analog shutoff. Here are some frequently asked questions with some answers that I hope help.  Also, at the end of the Frequently asked Questions, is a very important link to a website where you can apply for the converter boxes.

1. What is the DTV transition?

The digital TV (DTV) transition is the switch from traditional analog TV to digital TV, a modern technology with many benefits. February 17, 2009 is the deadline set for when traditional analog TV service will be shut off. The DTV service will be what remains. Most television stations, including WCNY, are currently broadcasting their programming in both analog and digital until February 17, 2009.

2. Will my analog TV work after February 17, 2009?

Your current television will work as it does now until analog broadcasting stops. Even after February 2009, your current TV will not become obsolete. If you are receiving WCNY using an antenna, a set-top converter box can be used to receive broadcast DTV signals and change them into the format of your current television.  In addition, if you use your analog set with a pay service like cable or satellite, it will continue to work as it always has.

3. How do I get a converter box?

Between Jan. 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all U.S. households will be eligible to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase of up to two, digital-to-analog converter boxes. More information about the converter box coupon program:

4. Do I need a special antenna to receive digital tv?

In general, a good rule of thumb is that if you receive a good quality signal from WCNY now, you will receive a good digital signal.  If you now need a roof-top antenna to receive WCNY, the same antenna generally will be needed to receive DTV.   For specific information on using an antenna to receive WCNY Digital, and other local television broadcast channels visit www.antennaweb.org.

Now here is the important part.
