Syracuse, NY:  Studio C at WCNY was alight with giggles and proud-parent smiles when thirteen children were honored Monday as winners of the Treehouse Tales Young Writers & Illustrators Contest.  The contest is an annual event for children in Kindergarten through Third Grade (K-3) and promotes literacy and creative expression by encouraging children to write and illustrate their own stories.

“There were an overwhelming number of submissions this year,” said Sue Butler, Coordinator of the Family Literacy Program at WCNY.  “From among 350 creative and touching stories we were challenged to choose just thirteen winners.  It was a joy reading all of the stories and an honor spending the afternoon letting these children know just how truly talented they are.”

Winners’ stories will be posted at www.wcny.org in the coming weeks.

Kindergarten: “Tinsels Great Adventure,” by Madison, General William Floyd Elementary (1st Place); “The Seasons Change and So Do I,” by Nancy, St. Patrick’s School (2nd Place); “The Magic Unicorn,” by Ashlyn, L. Pearl Palmer Elementary (3rd Place).  First Grade: “The Eyeball ‘Eyescream’ Shop,” by Emma, St. Patrick’s School (1st Place); “Don’t Sneeze Too Loud,” by MiKayla, Living Word Academy (2nd Place); “Me and My Parakeets,” by Mercy, Living Word Academy (3rd Place).  Second Grade: “How Kindness Gave Me Wealth,” by Bailey, Rockwell Elementary (1st Place); “The Power of the Jewels,” by Neo, Rockwell Elementary (2nd Place); “Away,” by Alyssa, Lake Street Elementary (3rd Place).  Third Grade: “Seasons of Poetry,” by Anna Madeline, State Street School (1st Place); “The Blanket of Luck,” by Kyla, State Street School (1st Place); “Panda’s Pancake Party,” by Francesca, Rome Catholic School (2nd Place); “Casey,” by Maya, Syracuse Hebrew Day School.
