WCNY HD RADIO

WCNY is bringing you a brand new radio listening experience called HD Radio (High Definition Radio). Digital radio is a new format for transmitting our radio signals using a method of transmission that allows us to provide:

  1. Our CLASSIC FM programming in crystal clear CD quality.

  2. AND, provide up to two more radio channels simultaneously.

  3. AND, continue to provide our existing analog FM signal.

Attention iPhone/iPod Touch owners!
You can listen to Classic FM and WCNY HD2 on your Apple iPhone and iPod Touch by using Wunder Radio, a 3rd party App available in the iTunes store.

This is multi-casting, just like we do with our digital television station. Using new technologies that have been developed, we are able to add in additional programming into our existing FM signals without losing quality.

You will often hear digital radio described as HD Radio, or IBOC radio. HD Radio is the name used for the new digital system. IBOC stands for In Band On Channel. This is the really great thing about the digital radio system. All of these additional services we will be providing are all combined right inside the same FM channel we are currently using. This means that you will still be able to use your current analog radio to get our CLASSIC FM signal until you are ready to get a digital radio.

When you are ready to get a digital radio, you will then be able to receive our CLASSIC FM programming in higher quality, and with no transmission static, and also take advantage of the additional programming services that we will provide. Digital radios are available for both home use and for your car.

WCNY is very pleased to bring you a digital version of our classic FM programming, and two additional channels in our digital signal. These channels will show up on a new digital radio receiver as WCNY-1, WCNY-2, and WCNY-3. WCNY HD1 is the Classic FM programming that you already are familiar with presented in a crystal clear digital audio.

Now, read on below for a description of our exciting channels

WCNY-HD2: “The Original Sound”

Listen WCNY-HD2 Now!

WCNY HD2WCNY's High Definition Radio (WCNY-HD2) brings back the music of popular radio stations in the 50s and 60s. This digital radio station is the only local music station to air National Public Radio (NPR) news, a respected radio news source, every hour on the hour. WCNY-HD2 also airs breaking news, as it happens.

Disc jockeys familiar to Central New York listeners are the voices of WCNY-HD2. Bill Baker hosts “Awake With Bake” in the morning segment.

Jack Mindy, Captain John Smith and Pete McKay are also on the air. As a tribute to the famous WOLF program of the 50s, WCNY-HD2 presents “The Sandman Serenade” every night at 11 p.m. “The Sandman,” veteran announcer Joe McDonough, offers softer songs for your relaxation and will reveal your fortune for tomorrow when he opens “your fortune cookie.”

Discover how good radio can sound. HD Radio™ technology lets stations transmit a higher-quality digital version of their regular AM/FM broadcasts. With HD Radio, you'll get:

  • Better sound quality: FM approaches CD-quality sound, and AM sounds as good as regular FM.
  • Static-free reception: No crackle, no hiss.
  • More listening options: A multicast-compatible HD Radio receiver lets you pull in extra channels that regular radios can't get.
  • Free programming: No monthly charges.
