About the Lesson Plan Curriculum: Health Grade Level: 9-12 Length of Lesson: 2 Sessions This Lesson Plan was developed to support classroom use of the documentary Facing HIV/AIDS in Central New York. Learning Objects: Students will analysis the relationships between physical activity and the contraction of HIV/AIDS virus, examine HIV/AIDS epidemic in minority communities, understand prevention and risk reduction strategies and know how to access community resources. Materials: Computer with Internet Access Newspapers and Magazines Poster board Markers, Glue, Scissors, paper and pens Procedure: Class Period One Break students into groups. Ask the students to share what they already know about HIV/AIDS. Each group should have someone write down the key points made during the group discussion. After viewing the video the teacher will introduce vocabulary words, AIDS, Antibody, HIV, Immune System, and Safe Sex. Allow time for students to discuss the video. During class discussion students should be encouraged to share the prior small group discussions as they analysis and examine the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Teaching Activity: Class Period Two In small groups students will plan and design an eye-appealing poster that depicts a message or messages conveyed during the video, Facing HIV/AIDS in Central New York. Each poster should reflect an understanding of HIV/AIDS and can be displayed in the classroom or other parts of the school building to enhance awareness of HIV/AIDS. The student can incorporate downloaded segments of the HIV/AIDS Video into their presentation. Vocabulary AIDS Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; a collection of illnesses which signal that one's immune system has been damaged or suppressed by HIV infection. Antibody A specialized protein found in the blood that assists white blood cells in inactivating or eliminating a specific bacteria or virus. HIV Human immunodeficiency virus—the virus shown to cause AIDS. Immune System A system in the body that fights and kills bacteria, viruses, and foreign cells and which is weakened by HIV. Safe Sex commonly used term describing sexual practices, which minimize the exchange of blood, semen, and vaginal fluids.
