Kristi Andersen

Kristi Andersen is Professor in the Department of Political Science at Syracuse University; she has been teaching in the Maxwell School since 1984, and chaired the department from 1996 to 2001. She is Laura J. and R. Douglas Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence. Previously she taught at Ohio State University, after receiving her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and her B.A. from Smith College.

In 1996 she published After Suffrage: Women in Partisan and Electoral Politics Before the New Deal, which won the Victoria Schuck Award from the American Political Science Association for the best book on women and politics published in 1996. Her earlier book, The Creation of a Democratic Majority, 1928-1936, has been influential in shaping political scientists’ thinking about the New Deal realignment. Kristi Andersen has also published articles on such topics as the gender gap; voting for male and female candidates; the effects of entering the work force on women’s political participation; the prospects for electing more women to Congress; the changing meanings of U.S. elections; and the political incorporation of immigrants.

She was elected to the Cazenovia Town Council in 2005, and is also a member of the WCNY-TV weekly “Ivory Tower Half Hour” panel.
