Update on New PBS LearningMedia and VITAL (updated 03/21/12)
The latest information indicates that the anticipated merger date between VITAL and PBS LearningMedia will occur in summer 2012, so there is nothing you need to do or change at this time to continue to use the great resources of VITAL! But...you should establish an account NOW in the VITALNY powered by PBS LearningMedia (operating as a BETA site - not all features active!) as VITAL accounts will not automatically transfer to the PBS LearningMedia platform. Go to vitalny.pbslearningmedia.org to sign-up - it's easy!
In the meantime, here is additional information about the merger:
New York State's Public Television stations are pleased to announce that over the coming months, VITAL NY will be going through a major upgrade in service and content that will benefit all users. This "2.0" version of VITAL NY will be powered by PBS LearningMedia, a new national portal for public broadcasting content, yielding a dynamic new combination of all of the high quality multimedia resources and features you already utilize on VITAL, with an exciting new online environment and four times as much content. The resources will be aligned to National and Common Core Standards for student achievement.
PBS LearningMedia is a free digital media service that offers the best of public media digital content and resources from programs like NOVA, Frontline American Experience, and Sid the Science Kid, to name just a few. It's free to establish an account, which allows you to search, save, and share thousands of resources, incluidng short video clips, interactives, primary source documents and more. Important features like downloads and standards are coming soon, in time for the 2012-2013 school year.
VITAL NY resources will be fully moved to the new PBS LearningMedia platform this summer and VITAL users will be given plenty of notice before the current VITAL site goes away. VITAL users will also receive instructions on how to move any folders they've created in VITAL into the new service. That's why it's important to establish an account today in the new PBS LearningMedia service.
The "Help" link on the PBS LearningMedia homepage is the place to go for tutorials, how-to screencasts, online modules, and a user guide.
The official launch of this merged, upgraded service is expected to take place in late summer, 2012. In the meantime, there will not be any disruption to your direct access to VITAL NY, and you can continue to log in and access VITAL NY through WCNY's website. All media content from our current VITAL NY service, and more, will be accessible on this new platform free of charge for educational use in New York State.
If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Stack, WCNY's Director of Interactive Education. In the meantime, thank you for your ongoing utilization of VITAL, and we look forward to continuing to provide you with access to high quality public media to support your instruction.
Note: As updated information about the new service becomes available, WCNY will post it here.
