Foundation aid formula unlikely to change in this budget

The bulk of state funding for education will likely be distributed by the same formula as usual in the budget that is due on April 1.

Despite calls from advocates and state lawmakers to adjust the foundation aid formula, Assembly Education Committee Chair Michael Benedetto, a Bronx Democrat, told The Capitol Pressroom that fight won’t be waged during the current budget cycle.

“I don’t see it being worked into this budget, but quite possibly budgets over the next couple years, maybe even next year,” he said.

Benedetto said there is general agreement that the formula is “very good” and only needs a “tweak or two.” In order to make a change, though, he said there would still need to be a lot of negotiations.
