Jan. 13, 2014: Dr. John King, Sen. Mike Gianaris, school consolidation
January 13, 2014
State Education Commissioner Dr. John King discusses the Governor’s education proposals, Speaker Silver’s comments about reevaluating the Common Core and NYSUT’s announcement that it will ask its board to issue a no-confidence vote against him.
Queens State Senator and Chairman of the State Senate Democratic Campaign Committee Mike Gianaris joins us to discuss the Governor’s State of the State, the IDC/Republican leadership coalition and ethics reform in light of the resignation of Assemblyman Dennis Gabryszak.
One of the conditions of the Governor’s tax freeze proposal is that residents’ local school districts show they are consolidating or sharing services. Two questions: Does consolidation and sharing services save money? Will voters be willing to give up their school identities for a tax break? We discuss these issues with Robert Lowry, Jr., Deputy Director, New York State Council of School Superintendents; Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra, Jr of the merged district of Central Valley; and Cornell’s John W. Sipple, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Development Sociology; Director of the NYS Center for Rural Schools; and Co-Director of the Community and Regional Development Institute.◄ Back to PodCasts
