June 3, 2019: Veterans Treatment Courts

After their military service, a number of veterans in New York and the country live with post-traumatic stress disorder and substance-use disorders. Veteran Treatment Courts look to be an alternative to incarceration for veterans who have committed low-level misdemeanor offenses that suffer from PTSD and substance use disorders. A bill from Sen. Brad Hoylman aims to expand access to these courts, Dr. David Sandman, President and CEO of the New York State Health Foundation, explained how these courts work and how they impact the lives of veterans.
