WCNY invites community to share family stories, attend virtual screening event
WCNY, Central New York’s public broadcaster, invites communities across Central New York to celebrate Season 7 of the popular PBS television show, “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” The new season premiered Jan. 19 and continues Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on WCNY-TV.
“Finding Your Roots” presents a unique opportunity to tap into the popularity of personal genealogy research in the United States. The series encourages people of all backgrounds to take a closer look at their own family and personal stories; exploring how these histories can provide identity, narrative, or a sense of place; and discovering how they can pass this knowledge along to future generations.
Share Your Family History
In celebration of the new season, WCNY invites the community to submit a family photo and brief story/history to accompany it at wcny.org/findingyourroots. WCNY will post submissions to its website to share the ancestral stories of Central New Yorkers. All submissions will be entered to win one of dozens of gift cards.
Finding Your Roots Season 7 Virtual Screening and Genealogy Lesson Event
WCNY will also host a virtual event in celebration of the new season. The Finding Your Roots Season 7 Virtual Screening and Genealogy Lesson Event will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 4 on Zoom. Join WCNY, in partnership with the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA), to watch clips from Season 7 and learn how to explore your own family history and preserve important documents with experts from OHA. Following the lesson, OHA experts will host a live Q&A with attendees. The event is free, but registration is required at wcny.org/events or call (315) 453-2424.
