Free Screening of ‘Independent Lens—Tell Them We Are Rising’

In celebration of Black History Month, WCNY, Central New York’s community-owned flagship public broadcaster, is hosting a free community screening of “Independent Lens—Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities.” The event will take place in the television studios at WCNY’s Robert J. Daino Broadcast and Education Center, 415 W. Fayette St., from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25. “Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities” traces the rise and influence of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This 150-year story dates back to the mid-19th century before the end of slavery, and continues through the Civil Rights Movement, up to the present. Discover how Black Universities fundamentally shaped Black life in America, created a Black middle class, and dismantled segregation. Join Chef Marcus Samuelsson in an inspiring journey across the U.S. with the PBS series, “No Passport Required.” Share in a celebration of culture as he explores the diversity of immigrant culinary traditions woven into American culture. Born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, Samuelsson is passionate about demonstrating the way food unites people of all backgrounds. Celebrate cuisine from around the world prepared by talented chefs, including New Americans who are enriching the culinary culture of Central New York. Working with partners, such as the Salt City Market, this event will showcase chefs sharing not just their food but their stories. Also featured will be screenings of content from the series. “No Passport Required” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on WCNY-TV from Jan. 20–Feb. 17.

East Lake Meadows Screening and Panel Discussion

WCNY will co-host a screening of the new documentary, Ken Burns Presents—East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion on the future of Syracuse public housing developments near I-81, with guest speakers Vince Love, the CEO of Blueprint 15; William Simmons, the Executive Director of the Syracuse Housing Authority; Professor Gretchen Purser from Syracuse University; and local public housing representatives. East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story is made possible through grant funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS, and public television viewers. Ken Burns Presents—East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story Meadows traces the history of public housing in Atlanta, Ga. In 1970, East Lake Meadows was constructed as the home for thousands of low-income Atlantans. Ever wonder what it’s like to be the mayor of the city? What kind of work does it take to successfully manage a business? Is it your dream to be a professional journalist or photographer? Or maybe you want to exercise your right to vote in an election? Students will learn and apply skills in areas such as STEM, finance, or civic literary, in order to succeed in this real game of LIFE. This immersive, hands-on experience will prepare students for long-term success by teaching the skills expected of employees and citizens.

Holocaust Remembrance

In partnership with Menorah Park, the Jewish Federation of Central New York, and the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse, WCNY will co-host a special screening event in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Auschwitz Liberation, which took place in January. This event will feature Secrets of the Dead—Bombing Auschwitz and Frontline’s film Documenting Hate—New American Nazis. Secrets of the Dead—Bombing Auschwitz presents a multi-faceted debate on the question of whether the Allied forces should have bombed Auschwitz in order to prevent future atrocities of this magnitude. Frontline: Documenting Hate—New American Nazis investigates the resurgence of white supremacist groups who are actively recruit in the U.S. military through a documentation of these terrorist groups and their connections to events like the 2017 Charlottesville rally.
