On the latest episode of Repeating History, our guest is Dr. Thomas Guiler, Director of Museum Affairs at the Oneida Community Mansion House. Dr. Guiler is the author of the brand new book, The Handcrafted Utopia: Arts and Crafts in America’s Progressive Era. This excellent new monograph examines the fascinating history of three of the nation’s most important utopian communities, Byrdcliff, Rose Valley, and Roycroft. In response to the trauma of industrialization and urbanization in the late-nineteenth century, the Arts and Crafts Movement took America by storm. Art exhibits, workshops, and societie dedicated to handicraft, worker dignity, and the production of beautiful art for the masses sprouted from California to Boston. The conversation also includes a discussion of the fascinating history of John Humphrey Noyes and the Oneida Community.
