WCNY, Central New York’s public communications organization, will air a special program, “Latino Issues: A Conversation with the 2025 Syracuse Democratic Mayoral Candidates,” beginning Thursday, June 19 on both its Community FM and Pulso Central stations.
Democratic primary candidates Pat Hogan, Chol Majok, and Sharon Owens participated in this focused conversation, each responding to six key questions about issues impacting Syracuse’s Latino community. Topics include equitable access to housing, healthcare, education, employment, representation in city leadership, and public safety.
When asked how his administration would ensure equitable access to essential services for the Latino community, candidate Pat Hogan stated, “We will reach into the communities to find out what the issues are and what the problems are. Communication is important. We need to gain access to that community, to find out exactly what their issues are, and to actively help them, not just to listen to them, but to help folks.”
Candidate Chol Majok responded to a question about Latino representation in city leadership by saying, “In my plan, I have said that 30% of my administration should be in other languages. I have said that part of running as Mayor is to create a system reset in this community to create a new beginning that becomes inclusive of everybody.”
On improving trust between the Syracuse Police Department and the Latino community, Sharon Owens stated, “I want to ensure those policies stay in place and are enacted upon by our police department. As far as the relationships, we must get out there. The best way to build a relationship is to look a man or a woman in the eye and talk to them about the issues and the concerns they have in the community.”
“This special 30-minute program reflects our commitment to empowering voters with the information they need to make thoughtful choices about the future of their city—especially on issues critical to the Latino community.” said Mitch Gelman, President and CEO of WCNY.
“Latino Issues: A Conversation with the 2025 Syracuse Democratic Mayoral Candidates” will be available on Thursday, June 19 on Community FM in English, and on Pulso Central in both English and Spanish.
Listeners can also stream the program online at wcny.org/communityfm and pulsocentral.com.
