New ‘Artifex’ arts program to premier on WCNY Sept. 23

WCNY, Central New York’s public broadcasting company, this month will introduce a new weekly arts program that will feature local and national stories about film, visual and performing arts, theater, photography, literature, painting, sculpture, poetry and dance.

“Artifex” will premiere at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, on WCNY channel 24.1 and continue weekly in that Sunday timeslot. The half-hour program will be hosted by WCNY-FM radio hosts Bill Baker and Jon English.

“Artifex,” the Latin word for artist or craftsman, each week will lead viewers through artistic expressions in four compelling segments. Stories will include interviews with artists, writers, composers and performers.

“WCNY, through its television and radio programming, has a long history of bringing the best in art to our viewers and listeners. Artifex is the latest example of this, a program that will also provide WCNY with the opportunity to showcase our region’s art and artists, not only to Central New York but to the rest of the nation, through feature stories it will produce,” said WCNY President and CEO Robert J. Daino.

The premiere features Jeremy Denk, renowned concert pianist; Alexander Heilner, a photographer whose images are captured in the clouds; Karen Gustafson, an artist who draws what the naked eye can’t see by using an electron microscope; and Dunya Mikhail, a poet who reveals poignant history through verse.

“Artifex” is presented through a collaboration between WCNY and New York City public broadcasters WNET and WLIW, and the MMG Arts Initiative.
