Our topic today is the extraordinary life of Syracuse’s own “defiant fugitive” Rev. Jermain W. Loguen, the Underground Railroad King and tireless freedom fighter. Bob and Professor Murphy talk about the research that went into her new biography of Loguen and how this nationally significant activist, speaker, organizer, politician, bishop, teacher, father, and husband devoted his entire life to fighting slavery and for the full citizenship of his fellow African Americans. Immortalized in statutory form in Syracuse for his role in the Jerry Rescue in 1851, a seminal event in the fight against slavery on the march to the Civil War and abolition, Loguen’s name should be a household name like his friends Frederick Douglass and John Brown.
