WCNY presents new ‘Vista’ program ‘Audible: Lessons from the High School Gridiron’ Labor Day

With football-related fatalities and serious sports injuries becoming a real concern for Central New York parents, WCNY’s award-winning public affairs series, “Vista” investigates the safety of sports in a new program, “Audible: Lessons from the High School Gridiron,” airing Monday, Sept. 3, at 9 p.m. on WCNY channel 24.1.

During the hour-long program, sports equipment industry experts, brain-injury researchers, local interscholastic sports officials, and athletes shed light on the state-of-mind of the game.

“This is a critical time to present this important show,” said Jim Aroune, WCNY’s vice president for Television and Radio. “Students return to school in just a few days and our hope is to create more awareness about this issue and open the conversation.”

The panel of experts includes Dr. Paul Klawitter of Crouse Hospital’s sports medicine department; Dr. Brian Rieger, head of the concussion management program at Upstate University Hospital; Dave Boyland, Homer High School’s assistant athletic trainer; Todd Nelson, director of safety and risk management for the New York State High School Public Athletic Association; Tim Green, former NFL, collegiate, high school and Pop Warner football player and former high school football coach.

The show also features interviews with research experts, including Dr. Jeffery Bazarian, University of Rochester Medical Center; Dr. Edward Benzel, neurosurgeon at the Cleveland Clinic; Jay Alberts, biomedical engineer at the Cleveland Clinic; Dr. Richard Figler, a Cleveland Clinic Sports Health physician; Dr. Richard Figler, a Cleveland Clinic Sports Health physician; and Adam Bartsch, director of the Spine Research Lab at the Cleveland Clinic.

WCNY’s “Vista” series premiered Feb. 6 with “Groundswell: Hydrofracking in New York State,” which won a national Bronze Telly Award. “Vista” concludes its successful first season with ‘Audible: Lessons from the High School Gridiron.’

“Audible: Lessons From the High School Gridiron,” airs Monday, Sept. 3, at 9 p.m. on WCNY channel 24.1.
